Week 8 Rival Kick Off
Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers will kick off week 8 with their Thursday night game in Tampa against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The division rivals are meeting for the time this season. The Bucs won the two-game series against the Panthers in 2012 and the Panthers got them both in 2011. This match-up is crucial for the Panthers’ to have a shot at playoffs.
Tampa has the second worst scoring offense in the league, averaging 14.5 points per game, evident by their 0-6 record. To make things worse, Doug Martin, their second year running back is out for the season with a torn labrum. Things aren’t looking favorable for the Bucs offense seeing that the Panthers defense is ranked 3rd in the league allowing only 302.2 yard per game and 2nd in the league for scoring defense allowing only 13.8 points per game.
Newton has played his best in the Panthers’ last 2 games completing 35 of 43 passes for 446 yards and no interceptions. He’s ranked 10th in the league with a passer rating of 95.0 and ranks 2nd in the NFL in third-down rating behind Peyton Manning. The team sits at 7th place in run offense. This is the best start the Panthers have had under Coach Ron Rivera. Things seem to finally be clicking and they’re showing some consistency.
When you look at the numbers, Carolina is the obvious pick to win this one. But as any Panthers’ fan has learned over the years, ANYTHING can happen when the Cardiac Cats take the field. Hold on to your seats Panthers fans, we still have 10 weeks left in regular season, Keep Pounding! By Sabrina Sales
