THE RECORDING ACADEMY ANNOUNCES OFFICIAL SPONSORS FOR 55TH ANNUAL GRAMMY AWARDS

Partners Team with The Academy for Music’s Biggest Night®

The Recording Academy® proudly announced its official sponsors for this year’s 55th Annual GRAMMY Awards®. Delta Air Lines, Dial Global Radio Network, Harman, Hilton Hotels & Resorts, Hitlab, Hyundai, MasterCard, PEOPLE, Pepsi, and Procter & Gamble (COVERGIRL, Olay and Herbal Essences) are all supporters of this year’s GRAMMY Awards and GRAMMY® Week events. The music industry’s premier event will take place live on Sunday, Feb. 10, at STAPLES Center in Los Angeles and will be broadcast in high-definition TV and 5.1 surround sound on the CBS Television Network from 8 – 11:30 p.m. (ET/PT). The show also will be supported on radio worldwide via Dial Global, and covered online at GRAMMY.com and CBS.com, and on YouTube. OSCAR® EXPERIENCE TO BE SHARED IN 45 CITIES ACROSS THE U.S.

header_awardsOn Oscar Sunday, February 24, charities in 45 cities will bring the Oscar experience to life at viewing parties in each city. The Oscar Experience: Benefits is the Academy’s grassroots outreach program that allows charities across the country to host official Oscar parties while raising money for their causes.

In 2012, the Oscar Experience: Benefits raised more than $3.1 million in 49 cities. Since its inception in 1994, as Oscar Night® America, the program has brought in more than $36.6 million, with all of the funds staying in the communities where they were raised.

All of the parties will feature a live broadcast of the 85th Academy Awards®; many will integrate Hollywood-style glamour elements, including red carpets, local celebrities, “paparazzi” and predict-the-winners contests.

“The Oscar Experience: Benefits is a natural extension of the philanthropic work the Academy does year-round,” said Academy CEO Dawn Hudson. “We are thrilled to share a part of the Oscar experience with movie fans nationwide while supporting charities across the country.”

OSCAR® HOST SETH MACFARLANE JOINS EMMA STONE TO ANNOUNCE OSCAR NOMINATIONS

Nominations for the 85th Academy Awards® will be announced by the show’s host, Seth MacFarlane, and actress Emma Stone on Thursday, January 10. This will be the first time since 1972 that an Oscar show host has participated in the nominations announcement.

MacFarlane and Stone will unveil the nominations at a 5:30 a.m. PT news conference at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills, where hundreds of media representatives from around the world will be gathered.

85TH OSCARS® TO FEATURE SPECIAL CELEBRATION OF JAMES BOND

The 85th Academy Awards® will include a tribute to the James Bond movie franchise, which is celebrating its 50th Anniversary this year, the telecast’s producers announced today.

“We are very happy to include a special sequence on our show saluting the Bond films on their 50th birthday,” said producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron. “Starting with ‘Dr. No’ back in 1962, the 007 movies have become the longest-running motion picture franchise in history and a beloved global phenomenon.”

9 FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILMS VIE FOR OSCAR®

Nine films will advance to the next round of voting in the Foreign Language Film category for the 85th Academy Awards®. Seventy-one films had originally qualified in the category.

The films, listed in alphabetical order by country, are:

Canada, “War Witch,” Kim Nguyen, director;
Chile, “No,” Pablo Larraín, director;

7 Features Advance in Race for Makeup and Hairstyling Oscar®

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today announced that seven films remain in competition in the Makeup and Hairstyling category for the 85th Academy Awards®.

The films are listed below in alphabetical order:

“Hitchcock”
“The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey”
“Les Misérables”
“Lincoln”
“Looper”
“Men in Black 3”
“Snow White and the Huntsman”

On Saturday, January 5, all members of the Academy’s Makeup Artists and Hairstylists Branch will be invited to view 10-minute excerpts from each of the seven shortlisted films. Following the screenings, members will vote to nominate three films for final Oscar consideration.

The 85th Academy Awards nominations will be announced live on Thursday, January 10, 2013, at 5:30 a.m. PT in the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater.

Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2012 will be presented on Sunday, February 24, 2013, at the Dolby Theatre™ at Hollywood & Highland Center®, and televised live on the ABC Television Network. The Oscar presentation also will be televised live in more than 225 countries worldwide.

282 Feature Films in Contention for 2012 Best Picture Oscar®

Two hundred eighty-two feature films are eligible for the 2012 Academy Awards®, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced today.

To be eligible for 85th Academy Awards consideration, feature films must open in a commercial motion picture theater in Los Angeles County by midnight, December 31, and begin a minimum run of seven consecutive days.

Under Academy rules, a feature-length motion picture must have a running time of more than 40 minutes and must have been exhibited theatrically on 35mm or 70mm film, or in a qualifying digital format.

Feature films that receive their first public exhibition or distribution in any manner other than as a theatrical motion picture release are not eligible for Academy Awards in any category. The “Reminder List of Productions Eligible for the 85th Academy Awards” is available at

The 85th Academy Awards nominations will be announced live on Thursday, January 10, 2013, at 5:30 a.m. PT in the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater.

15 DOCUMENTARY FEATURES ADVANCE IN 2012 OSCAR® RACE

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today announced that 15 films in the Documentary Feature category will advance in the voting process for the 85th Academy Awards®. One hundred twenty-six pictures had originally qualified in the category.

Rob Ashford to Choreograph 85th Academy Awards®

Emmy® and Tony® Award-winning choreographer Rob Ashford has been tapped to provide musical staging and choreography for the 85th Academy Awards telecast, show producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron announced today.

“Rob successfully directed and choreographed both of our recent Broadway revivals Promises, Promises and How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying. Not only is he uniquely gifted, but we’ve developed a working shorthand,” said Zadan and Meron. “We are excited to collaborate with him on the Oscars®, where we will be utilizing all his talents.”

Ashford’s work has been seen on “The Kennedy Center Honors” and “The Tony® Awards,” and in 2009, he won an Emmy for his work on the 81st Academy Awards show. He has been nominated for eight Tony Awards and won for Best Choreography in 2002 for Thoroughly Modern Millie. Ashford’s other Broadway choreography credits include The Wedding Singer, Curtains, Cry-Baby and Evita. Currently, Ashford is directing a revival of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof starring Scarlett Johansson.  Read the rest of this entry
